The lab is at currently at capacity
The lab is highly transdisciplinary by design. Promising junior scientists with experience in neuroscience, psychology, computer science, data science, biomedical engineering, or physics are welcome to reach out. Our research program is a great training platform for students and postdocs interested in careers in academic research, neurotechnology, software development, data science, brain-machine interfaces, medical devices, or the pharmaceutical industry.
We are affiliated with the graduate programs in Psychology, Biomedical Engineering, and Neuroscience.
We receive a large number of inquiries, especially around the start of application cycles and can only respond where there is a clear match in interests. In your initial email please make sure you:
Discuss specific research questions/areas you are interested in and why (don’t simply copy/paste keywords from this website)
How specific aspects of your previous work and/or training have prepared you to tackle these questions
How training in the lab will prepare you to achieve your near and long-term career goals
Attach your current CV and representative peer-reviewed publications or preprints (if applicable)
Undergraduates and potential graduate students should include their transcripts
Don’t use ChatGPT! AI-composed emails are easy to spot and are ignored.
For advice on how to contact potential supervisors, please see this helpful guide.
Our research is funded by The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), The Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI). We previously were supported by The National Eye Institute (NEI). The lab was started with generous support UCalgary Faculty of Arts, the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, with Lab renovations supported by a generous donation from the Eddy estate.

The Community
Calgary and Alberta are home to a vibrant neuroscience community. At the University of Calgary, neuroscience researchers can be found all across main campus and the Hotchkiss Brain Institute (HBI) in the Cumming School of Medicine. HBI brings together 300+ members spanning 16 departments and nine faculties.
Southward, there is the University of Lethbridge and the Canadian Centre for Behavioural Neuroscience. To the north in Edmonton, there is the University of Alberta and the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (AMII).

The City
The economist ranked Calgary as the 3rd most liveable city in the world and it shows. Calgary boasts the most extensive urban pathway and bikeway network and has one of the highest allocations of green space compared to other North American cities. Calgary is the third most diverse major city in Canada and over 120 languages are spoken here.
Driving across town is easy and a $5.5 billion dollar expansion of the light rail system is underway. Moreover, the cost of living pales in comparison to Toronto or Vancouver. We also have professional NHL (Go Flames Go!), CFL, and NLL teams as well as two amateur ice hockey teams.

The Surroundings
Calgary is an outdoor paradise. We are a short drive from world class nature including Kananaskis, Banff, and Yoho. You can be in B.C., Jasper, or Waterton Lakes in a few hours.
Summers offer incredible hiking, canoeing, biking and kayaking. In winter, you are never far from alpine or cross country skiing, snowshoeing, sleding, fat biking, or even drifting your car on a frozen lake.
